5 Easy Things to Improve Your Health This Summer

1) Stop drinking soda. It doesn’t matter if it is diet soda, or the full sugar variety, cutting out all the carbonation and artificial sweeteners is the single most important thing you can do to be healthier. The ingredients in soda mess with your metabolism and actually prevent you from losing weight. Instead: Replace it with homemade lemonade: Squeeze a lemon (vitamin C rich) in a chilled glass of water and add a few drops of stevia (an all natural sweetener with no calories) and a dash of salt.

2) Stop munching on processed snacks. Pretty much anything that comes pre-packaged and homogenized (chips, crackers, chewy granola bars) are loaded with nothing more than calories, bad carbohydrates and fat. Instead: snack on a handful of almonds, which are a great source of protein and healthy fat that will satisfy your hunger, boost your metabolism and provide you with a natural source of vitamins and minerals.

3) Limit Alcohol intake. The alcohol actually makes you more dehydrated and your liver needs a break. Try: Doing a liver Detox that will gently cleanse out your system so it can start working better. The side effects: Weight loss!!

4) Get off the Couch. Try not to hit the couch as soon as you walk in the door from work. Instead: Jump in the pool to beat the heat and swim a few laps back and forth. Not only will you get your heart pumping, the cool water actually helps metabolize fat! (Have you seen Michael Phelps lately??)

5) Avoid Stress. Too much of it will burn-out your adrenal glands, which aid your metabolism. The result: weight gain. Take time at least once a week to do an activity that helps you relax and connect with your inner self. Try: Yoga or martial arts. They help you physically, mentally, and spiritually.

There is a lot of information out there about how our bodies work, diets, what to eat, what not to eat and general health. Some things are still being researched and others are more understood. We wanted to take a look at a few sayings, myths and misnomers and shed some light on them. Hopefully this can help provide some common ground and avoid general dieting snafus.

Myth 1: You gain weight faster eating fattening foods.

Fact: Gaining real weight is a pretty slow process. To gain one pound of body fat you would have to eat an extra 3500 calories more than your body would use. The reverse is true as well. So if the scale is telling you that you have gained a few pounds in a short amount of time, it’s mostly due to fluids. Fluid weight will regulate itself. So don’t give up if you see this. Pay attention to the overall trends in your body weight. People think that they have blown their diet and feel guilty when they eat rich foods. Eating a chocolate bar won’t instantly put on pounds, so balance high-fat foods with healthy food and exercise.

Myth 2: Low-fat or no-fat diets are good for you.

Fact: Fifteen to twenty percent of daily calories should come from healthy fats. The body uses fat for energy, tissue repair, and transporting essential vitamins around the body. Typically women should have 30g-70g of fat per day and 40g-95g for men. Remember the grams of fat depend on the total calories. Quick tip: Cut out trans fats and saturated fats to significantly reduce heart disease risk.

Myth 3: Low-fat milk has less calcium.

Fact: Low-fat and skim milk actually have more calcium. Calcium is from of the water part of milk and not the cream, so it contains more calcium per drink. Drinking low-fat and skim milk can help you lose weight, maintain a healthy weight, and cut fat from your diet.

Myth 4: Low-fat foods help you lose weight.

Fact: Just because something says it’s low-fat or fat-free doesn’t mean that it’s low-calorie or calorie-free. These foods typically add extra sugars and thickeners to give it better flavor and texture, so calorie-wise It might be a little less or the same amount for the standard products. The amount of these foods consumed is important. People will have half-fat butter but use twice as much, which defeats the purpose.

Myth 5: Vegetarians can’t build muscle.

Fact: To build muscle your body needs protein. There are many other sources of protein other than meats (i.e. cheese, nuts, legumes, and grains). Vegetarians can be just as muscular as meat-eaters. Your body can only store a certain amount of protein. Consuming too much can have potential long-term side effects, so don’t over do it.

Myth 6: You shouldn’t eat late at night.

Fact: Recent studies are finding that when you eat isn’t as important as the amount you eat. Eating regularly throughout the day can help regulate your appetite and how much you eat. People who skip meals tend to overeat during the evening are more likely to be overweight.

Myth 7: My metabolism is just slow.

Fact: This one becomes more of an excuse for people who struggle to lose weight. Studies show that the bigger you are, the more calories your body needs, and the higher your metabolism is. Weight gain happens when you’ve eaten more calories than you body uses. Today people are more sedentary than ever. So your body is burning less calories, which can lead to weight gain. Quick fact: Less than 0.1% of people have a genetically slow metabolism, which means the odds are in your favor.

Myth 8: Cholesterol is bad for you.

Fact: Good cholesterol is used to build cells and make vital hormones, but remember there is good and bad cholesterol. Limit your saturated fats, which tend to raise the bad cholesterol, that are contained in meats, cheeses, cream, and butter. Eat unsaturated fats, which help good cholesterol, that are contained in nuts, legumes and seeds.

Myth 9: You can lose a lot of weight on crash diets or fasting.

Fact: It might show quick results, but it will actually hurt you in the long run. Crash diets and fasting not only burn fat, but muscle and tissue, as well. This can slow your metabolism, which means you need fewer calories than you typically do. So you are more likely to gain weight faster once you stop the crash diet.

Thanks to our friends at Green Tea HP for shedding light on all these myths and helping us lose weight the right way!!

While most people easily lose weight while on the HCG diet, some struggle with it and don’t know why. Here are the 5 most common reasons we see-

Are you eating all the food on the protocol?

There is a point at which the body will not release the stored fats to use for energy. If you are NOT eating the full 500-700 calories per day, we see that the body tends to hang on to every pound of fat that it has because it senses an extreme emergency. After a couple of weeks on the diet, many report that they simply are not hungry. But we find that those who don’t eat the full amount allotted to them each day tend to lose LESS weight than average.

Are you drinking a gallon of water?

The more water you drink, the more fat you will burn, and you will have more success on the HCG diet. Stay away from alcohol, soda and fruit beverages with sugar or artificial sweeteners in them.

Are your hormones working right?

If you are doing everything on the protocol and not losing weight like you should be, you should get your hormones checked. It can be done by a simple blood test and will provide a wealth of information about how efficient your body is working. We often see that people with low thyroid levels or high estrogen levels struggle with weight loss until we address these issues.

Are you exercising excessively?

While on the HCG diet, mild forms of exercising like walking is recommended. Strenuous exercise routines confuse the body. The HCG triggers the release of stored fats to be used as fuel, but if you are working out excessively, the body doesn’t know if it should release the stored fats for regular fuel, or if it needs to hang on to them to be used later, when you are working out. Because of this confusion, we find that those who do a lot of exercise actually lose less body fat while on HCG than those who don’t.

Are you cheating and don’t know it?

Since your body needs to be in ‘starvation mode’ in order for the HCG to release your stored fats to supplement your daily intake of calories, even the smallest things can prevent that. Anything with oil or sugar in it is a big NO NO. Even the ‘good’ oils like olive oil, nuts, peanut butter and avocados are to be avoided while on the protocol. If the HCG senses that you are giving your body fats, even in small amounts, it thinks it doesn’t need to release any of YOURS for survival.
